Looking at Hegel’s idea of a doubling of consciousness into empirical and transcendental consciousness then we can understand Hegel’s critique of Kant. The Real (which represents Kant’s noumena?) is slowly found through the process of determinate negation for Hegel, i.e. the empirical consciousness derives knowledge from phenomena and then the transcendental consciousness filters through that knowledge via a process of examination and correction which eventually will allow the Subject (which is self-consciousness) exceed itself into Substance (which is that which is not the Subject (self-consciousness)?). We can see the empirical consciousness has the object as the place where it derives knowledge from and the transcendental consciousness has (the empirical) consciousness as its object. So, can we eventually “understand” that which is noumenal via negation?
