Further Understanding the Thermodynamic Nature of Intelligence
On the Fate of Techno-Capitalism in the Face of Climate Change (Part 5)
In an earlier part of this we talked about how extropy is generally the same thing as intelligence, yet in his blog post “On Chaos,” Land suggests that “entropy production is roughly synonymous with intelligence” (“On Chaos”). So… what is going on here? There is in fact no contradiction as some would probably jump to claim. Land explains, “A dynamically innovative order, of any kind, does not suppress the production of entropy — it instantiates an effient mechanism for entropy dissipation” (“On Chaos”). Because intelligence is what it means for something to work which is also what extropy means, any system that works must be able to have a mechanism for the dissipation of produced entropy, and this mechanism is entropy, it is intelligence. In this way, disequilibrium is found in the fact that chaos is loterated, and enhancement of the disequilibrium is found in the fact that the dynamic system that is a system of intelligence can, through self-recursive improvement, tolerate more and more entropy, or chaos, which is to say, it can solve more and more problems before not working, i.e., not being able to solve the problem before it. Oddly enough, the dynamic order that arises in the face of chaos is called spontaneous order which is generally used by anarcho-capitalists to argue that central planning is not only inefficient compared to the natural order but also that there spontaneously arises a natural order.
