For Georges Bataille, desire is a desire for the totality, which is becoming ontologically continuous, undifferentiated. In the Hegelian schema, which Bataille notes and follows here, (teleological) desire is self-differentiation. Therefore, desire is the desire (discontinuity; differentiation) to leave desire (continuity; undifferentiation). In this way, we can sort of see a pseudo-Bataillean “death drive” in that desire is the desire to “quell” itself.

How sweet terror is, not a single line, or a ray of morning sunlight fails to contain the sweetness of anguish. - Georges Bataille
